Creating cover thumbnails

When adding news articles about the latest issue, or adding supplementary data it is nice to have a thumbnail of the journal cover. Here's what I do:

Step 1
Shrink cover to a bitmap 128 pixels wide.

Step 2
In Photoshop create a new image with a width of 140 pixels and a height of 180 pixels.

Step 3
Paste in the cover thumbnail. Add a drop shadow to the layer (Layer -> Layer Style -> Drop Shadow).

The resulting cover will look something like this:
